For a horror/comics fan, there is certainly no shortage of material available to fulfill a raging fright fix. That doesn't mean there's any mass quantities of quality material but whatever your preferred persuasion of the genre, there's certainly a comic book being published to fill your empty mental horror hole.
One stand-out currently on the racks is Boom! Studio's Tag. The plot reads like something recently imported from Japan along with The Ring, The Grudge, etc. but this is good ol' strange American horror at its finest. Basically, the story opens with some poor schmoe being 'tagged' on the street by someone looking suspiciously zombie-esqe. Before long our protagonist realizes that he has been cursed to slowly rot away, basically a sentient "zombie", unless he tags someone else and passes on the curse. Seems like an easy enough thing to do, but much like the childhood game of the same name, there are rules to be followed in order to 'tag' your accursed successor.
This one's a winner, folks. The story is creepy and compelling and the art perfectly conveys the horrific desperation the central character experiences in trying to stop themselves from literally becoming the living dead. The original series is available thru Boom!'s Web site with the first issue of the current series also out on the racks now. And if yer not much of a comic fan, I hear that Tag will soon be making the jump to the silver screen.
